I was hoping that Adam would get the Disneyland job so then I would know someone who was professionally qualified to tell me what is so great about Disneyland. I haven’t stopped being curious about this it’s just the only thing anyone has told me that made a lick of sense was ‘there are some rides’.

I’ve recently gained a small obsession with Disneyland, despite only having been once, to the Paris one, and a long time ago, so I’ll attempt to explain.

The amount of work put into creating Disneyland as a moving, evolving, miniature environment with a whole bunch of different themed areas, each thoroughly immersive in its own way, is pretty damn impressive. There’s an overwhelming culture of design and theory behind each little part of it, from the rides to the physical areas inbetween, and it creates a kind of hyper-realistic cartoon that you’re able to experience and explore without the limitations of a plain ol’ animation. For example, I read an interview a while back with the guy who created the sound-system that provides a kind of soundtrack to the entire park. He spent years working on a system so that each individual hidden amplifier would play a piece of music that both blended seamlessly with the last and changed the further you walked, always creating a complete piece of music that fit perfectly the visual tone of the area of the park. For instance, in the New Orleans Square bit, you’d hear a jangly Cajun tune, which veeery gradually turned into a creepy, mystical Horror type sound as you neared the Haunted Mansion. The Haunted Mansion’s another example, there are a bunch of blogs which post solely things about the art and design in the Mansion, focussing on each and every character, scene and event in the ride. Imagine a tiny world, full of those sorts of things, and that’s what’s so great about Disneyland.

Forgive the rubbishness of my thought-clarity, I’m full of gin and I’ve just been bitten by a dalmatian.
